Loki (Season 1)

Loki might be the god of mischief, but the universe had pulled quite a prank on him this time around. In “Avengers: Endgame,” Loki, reprised by Tom Hiddleston, escaped superhero custody using a magical glowing gadget. Unfortunately for him, this made him go into a different timeline, where he was immediately thrown on by the dark uniformed paramilitary cops of the Time Variance Authority, a previously unknown organization that works to prevent new timelines splitting off from the one already approved.

Brad Newsome said in his review, “And so this genre-twisting six-episode series plonks an actual god – hilariously enough – into a Kafkaesque bureaucratic nightmare. The TVA HQ is a futuristically dated megalopolis full of offices, libraries and courtrooms that might have been directly imported from the fancy parts of 1960s East Germany. Sinister orientation cartoons explain what fresh heck this is, and Loki, stripped of his magic powers, quickly realises that there are only two possible ways out.”

One is quick, permanent forgetfulness at the hands of the TVA. Perhaps, the other is in making himself useful to the TVA. Particularly to investigator Morbius M. Morbius, played by Owen Wilson, who is hunting a time-hopping “variant” even more dangerous than Loki. Suddenly, “Loki,” released in 2021, becomes a mismatched-buddy-crime show – and one that works greatly in its regard.

Wilson, now at the height of his career, is a real blare. He’s undeniably perfect as the grey old detective person, but he’s also straight-faced comedy gold, and watching him and Hiddleston (a clearly English type of Norse god, it must be said) play off each other is an enjoyable delight. Morbius has seen it all before. Newsome said, “Loki sputters, seethes and is seduced by temptation to his ego.”

Director Kate Herron allows the comic beats a delicacy that improves their impact. Newsome said, “Your average star-clogged Marvel movie has little hope of reaching Gene Siskel ’s old baseline for a film worth watching – that it be more interesting than a documentary of the same actors having lunch. Loki, though, makes you feel like you are having lunch with Wilson and Hiddleston.”

Newsome continued, “And while it’s quite possible that nobody has ever even thought of doing that before (apart from maybe Herron, series creator Michael Waldron and executive producer Kevin Feige), it suddenly shapes as the hottest lunch ticket in our timeline.” Everything is highly accessible to non-Marvel fans as well.

When I saw this show on Disney+, I found myself thoroughly enjoying this. I think you will as well because it is one of those duos who are polar opposites, and those are just enjoyable to watch. Check this out if you have seen the other MCU shows, as this first season of “Loki” is just great. I’m curious as to how they will make the second season, and when that will be released. We’ll just have to wait and see, as I believe they said this also set up “Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness” like how “WandaVison” did.

Tomorrow I will not be looking at another MCU or Star Wars show. I’m going to go back and review a film that, what I didn’t know, was another film that is based off of a Disney World ride. It must be an old one that I went on when I was five or one that was released sometime after I was there. Check it out tomorrow on “Disney Month 2022” to see what I thought of it.
