Captain America: Civil War

Today I got a chance to see “Captain America: Civil War,” which was released yesterday. In 2014’s “Captain America: The Winder Soldier,” directors Anthony and Joe Russo, and writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, gave a first-rate political thriller in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The same directing/writing team is back to start Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with “Captain America: Civil War,” and they don’t disappoint.

The film takes place one year after what happened in “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” and opens with a split of the Avengers – Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans), Sam Wilson/The Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) – on a mission in Africa to stop a group of terrorists, and it doesn’t end well. On the side, Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.) has a guilt trip (not underserved!) put on him by the grieving mother of an American (Alfre Woodard) caught in the battle during “Avengers: Age of the Ultron’s” climactic Battle of Sokovia.

Stark brings in the man who wants the Hulk, General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, played by William Hurt, now the US Secretary of State, to the Avengers headquarters’ to tell his soldiers about the threatening “Sokovia Accords,” which will turn over regulation and control of “enhanced” individuals to a United Nations committee. Allan Bourdius said in his review, “As if the United Nations (in our own real world knowledge) has ever shown itself capable of anything productive.”

The sides quickly head up with the most uncontrolled, Stark, leading the case to have the Avengers put under international control. He immediately has his friend James Rhodes/War Machine (Don Cheadle) and the Vision (Paul Bettany), who’s basically a Stark creation as well.

How many times can you recall hearing Stark’s argument when it comes to expanding government in our lifetime? Acquiesce a little, so you don’t give up a lot – except the acquiescing never is so miniscule. Captain America is firm that he won’t sign on, and The Falcon and Scarlet Witch are on his side, the latter ending up on effective house arrest in the Avengers’ headquarters.

As the Sokovia Accords are about to be approved during the UN session in Vienna, Austria, a bomb goes off killing a handful at the conference including King T’Chaka of Wakanda, played by John Kani, who was the main international shot of the Accords (Bourdius mentioned, “Wakanda is the nation which is the sole source of the fictional “vibranium”, of which Cap’s shield is made”). The attack is blamed on the Winter Soldier, better known as Cap’s friend James “Bucky” Barnes, played by Sebastian Stan. Cap decides to kidnap Bucky, which starts some issues between Team Iron Man and Team Captain America.

As the between the Avengers starts, we also get introduced to Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), as well as seeing once again Clint Barton/Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Scott Lang/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd).

Bourdius admitted, “Unfortunately, I can’t really give much more detail without spoilers. Suffice to say that the story arcs presupposed from watching the trailers aren’t exactly correct, so there are plenty of twists and turns in the plot to keep everyone interested. Civil War is the longest MCU film to date (2:26), but it never drags.”

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s” themes of absolute power damaging absolutely and some distrust of power can be fine are continued by “Captain America: Civil War,” and adds in the rights of the individual to make choices for themselves being higher to the needs of authority to control those choices. One character says, “Compromise where you can, but where you can’t: don’t.”

That’s a feeling many of us will be thinking about in our politics as we are getting closer to November’s election. I agree with Bourdius when he says, “Civil War earns its place among libertarian-leaning cultural offerings that “our side” would be well to use in bringing people towards a limited government/limited authority viewpoint. A government with the power to protect you absolutely is also powerful enough to deprive you of everything that makes life worth living.”

Bourdius goes on to say, “And it’s a film like CA:CW which shows how conservatives and libertarians regularly fail cultural tests. I can envision conservatives of several different stripes discarding the film simply because it has a character named “Black Panther” (“Oh! This must be a racial justice effort!”), and that’s a total shame. As in our own lives, politics, and cultural interactions, lines do get blurred in the movie, but in the end, inalienable truths on life and liberty turn out to be, well, inalienable.” There will be people who don’t like the message the film delivers, particularly those who think picking the side that isn’t as evil is a continued path to success.

In the end, all of us have choices to make, and we can break down this year’s election to, “Are you ‘Team Captain America,’ or are you ‘Team Iron Man’?” Are you for everyone as individuals, or for authority? I know for sure that I will always be Team Captain America.

Spoiler Alert: in the post-credits scene, Parker is recovering from injuries, with his Aunt May, played by Marisa Tomei, giving him an ice-pack, when his web-shooters project a Spider-Man symbol on his ceiling.

You have to go see this movie in the theater, if you are Marvel fan, an Avengers fan, and/or a Captain America or Iron Man fan. As a sequel to “Winter Soldier” and “Age of Ultron,” this movie succeeded on every level. This is the best of the “Captain America” movies, and is by far, the best superhero movie this year. I consider this another one of my favorites. Phase 3 is off to an excellent start and I’m looking forward to the other movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hope Davis and John Slattery are in here playing Iron Man's parents and Emily VanCamp reprises her role as Sharon Carter.

Stay tuned next Friday when I continue “The Matrix Month.”

  1. Great review I was also for team America.

So for who are you voting? I hope it is not Bernie Sanders. I don`t think he protects freedom at all and he is fanatically pro-abortion. The Democrats are very pro-choice, pro gay, in favour of state control over education, and anti-Christian.

I think that the Democrats are team Iron Man. What do you think? They are against the freedom to carry guns, and they want to force the transgender agenda on schools. They also want to limit religious freedom by forcing hospitals to provide abortion and gender reassignments. They also want to promote pre-marital sex, adultery, and abortion amongst children.

    1. That's a nice observation that you made here.

Just to let you know, I am voting for Hilary Clinton because I believe that her policy seems to make the most sense, and plus she has reached out to every single demographic all over the world. Do you agree?

  2. To be honest I think Hilary Clinton is terrible. She supports abortion at 8.5 months for any reason. She also very pro gay. The Democrats are always pro gay, pro abortion, anti religious freedom. You oppose abortion and homosexuality right?

    1. Yes, I am pro-life with abortion and I am against gay marriage, but I do not hate gays. I think that everyone should be treated equally, as I have gay friends.

Are you saying that you want Donald Trump to be the next president? Because you do know that he will make the USA look like everyones worse enemy and the worse place to be

  3. Personally I had hoped for Ted Cruz. What do you think will be so terrible about Trump?

    1. Have you not heard what he plans on doing? Building a wall around the borders so that foreigners will not be able to enter the USA, basically wants to go to war with every country known to man, destroy the job market, and is all around every definition of the word evil. He is a bigot, mysognist, racist, everything. He hates everyone except for those who are just like him.

  4. Well he wants to keep out illegal immigrants, who don`t register, or pay taxes. Illegal immigrants are different from normal immigrants or refugees. I think racism is stupid and wrong, and I have nothing against immigrants, but a lot of the immigrants supported by Liberal and Leftist governments are often very racist themselves. Europe has dealt with this for many decades. Most immigrants are on well fare, and commit crimes. I have been assaulted by them many times. I have also been friends with some, including multiple Muslims, but some are really terrible. How do you think he is racist? What did he say that was racist? Obama also said anti-white racist things.

Look, I don't like talking about politics, so that is enough talk about the election because I do not want to get worked up. Enough is enough!

  5. Oh I am sorry. I just really enjoy talking with you about various things. Don`t get upset. This review just inspired me to think more about the upcoming elections. There currently are a lot of political struggles. I thought we could discuss these things as friends.

    1. One thing that you will notice is that I hate politics. I like talking to you about various things as well, but no more about politics.

Have you seen Deadpool and Batman v Superman yet? If so, have you read my reviews on them?

      Delete
    2. No I haven`t seen those films yet. I am surprised you hate to talk about politics. We talk about it 4 years ago during the previous elections. You also do a lot of reviews of political films. I am currently very focused on politics as political matters have often very negatively affected me. I was often abused as a child by my teachers due the governmental policy. I was also abused by a homosexual man. Something I recently discovered.

    3. That may have been the case with us regarding politics. Even though people say that I could be a politician, I really hate politics. Nowadays people use it as a means to play a dirty game and I don't like that. Plus, with all the election going on this year, I'm in withdrawal.

I'm sorry that you were abused as a child by your teachers and by the homosexual man. This probably makes you understand how dirty politics has gotten and that no matter how hard it can be to clean it up, it just gets dirtier. That is why I don't want to talk about it and I accept your apology.

    4. I am still upset over the whole abortion stuff. I was so happy years ago when I learned you were pro-life and discovering that Planned Parenthood sells baby organs was quite shocking. Hilary Clinton supports late trimester abortions. I think every person who believes in God as a duty to stand up against this. The Democrats wants to force religious doctors and hospitals to provide abortions and abortificants. Hilary Clinton even supports partial birth abortion. Obama supported infanticide.

I am happy that the Catholic Church is helping ban abortion in Poland. Abortion is Demonic. Btw do you have Skype?

      Delete
    5. Look, I understand how upset you are over abortion, but I "do not" want to discuss these political matters anymore! Politics just gets me worked up and I can only get worked up so much before I finally crack and it gets ugly. So, I ask you again, as a friend and as a favor, "no more!" I cannot emphasize that more than enough.

Also, no I don't have a Skype. Do you?

    6. Hey so I was curious how you are doing? Have you been able to contact me yet on Youtube? Also I will try to check out even more of your reviews. Also I just wanted to apologise again for all of the political discussions but I hope my support for many of your reviews kind of made up for it. I really love your reviews and we have been friends for years. I hope you are doing better as I have been rather sad recently. My cat died, I don`t know if I told you yet and I am sick a lot. One old friend of mine on Youtube said he would support me now that I was going trough tough times but he became rather mean also over the political stuff. It is just so frustrating that I can`t really talk about this peacefully with anyone it seems, because it means so much to me. I wish people could be more like the characters in movies that can talk about this stuff. I really hope you are not mad anymore. It really scared me when you warned me you wouldn`t want to talk with me anymore as I have been rather alone for a long time. I just miss the time that we could have relaxed talks about this as we used to on Youtube. That seemed to be a happier time, but I guess you are going through rough times as well. That is why I pray so much for you. I hope it is ok for me to ask, do you think we can even have fun discussions about political stuff again somewhere in the future when you are doing better? Because I always thought our friendship was so strong that we could talk about anything and there I so much I want to ask.

    7. Hey man, I have been doing better. I understand how this is meaningful to you, and I do think that when things start to get better, we can talk about politics. I will try contacting you on YouTube again, and hopefully you will get the message. I'm not going to stop being your friend, and I'm sorry I scared you. I was just trying to look out for you since I didn't want you to be removed as a user on the internet because of the wrong type of messages. I understand what you're going through and I'm not mad at you at all. I'm sorry your other friend has been disrespectful to you and I would hate for you to be alone. I think I remember you telling me about your cat and I'm sorry about that. I had an aunt whose bird passed away a few months ago that I was really close to as a friend. Losing a pet is like a family member dying, so I understand. I hope you get better soon as I would hate for anything drastic to happen to you. We will stay reviewing friends and I will send you message to you soon.

    8. Thank you so much. That is really nice. It means a lot for me that you say that. You are a great friend. I am happy you are doing better. I feel sorry for your aunt. Your reviews are fantastic. I agree with them a lot. Thank you for working with me on our great Star Wars and Lethal Weapon reviews.

    10. Hey I hope it is ok I ask this now since you said we could talk about politics later and it is just a small thing, if not than I am sorry, but have you read that Trump did condemn the racist wing of the alt right many months ago? The alt right is a diverse movement but I strongly dislike the racists within it, who certainly do exist and I think it is terrible. I am right-winged but that is because I am pro-life and stuff like that. I am very happy that Trump condemned the white supremacists. I read your earlier message again and thought it was interesting that since your message, Trump has condemned white supremacists who support him. Unlike Obama who didn`t condemn the black supremacists who supported him. So I thought this was very good. What do you think? He has also acknowledged that Obama was born in the USA a while ago, and there seems to be evidence that Hillary originally helped start this claim when she was opposing Obama. I thought that was interesting. Hope this doesn`t bother you. I am just happy that it seems Trump isn`t really racist. Makes me more optimistic.

    11. Look, I told you to stop talking about politics because I don't want any of us to get into trouble. For right now, I want you to stop. No, I haven't paid attention to what is going on out there, and I'm perfectly happy with it. I'm going to repeat myself: STOP!

    12. I am I guess I was confused. You said that when things got better, which I thought they were, that we could discuss politics. I guess I misunderstood you. I am sorry. I just thought this might have been good news for you. I didn`t know this news could get us in trouble? I apologise.

      Delete
    13. Things have "not" gotten any better. Quite frankly, I don't care what is going on out there in the world, and I'm happy with it. Please do not update me on what is going on because I "don't" want to hear anything political. You better understand now because I will not tolerate another word about White House news.

    14. Sorry you said in an earlier message: "Hey man, I have been doing better. I understand how this is meaningful to you, and I do think that when things start to get better, we can talk about politics." So I didn`t know you really weren`t doing better or were still upset about stuff so you don`t have to get so angry. I have tried really hard to support many of your reviews and I was just confused by what you said. I just thought it was good news which would make you happy so please don`t get so angry.

    15. I meant as in a few years, not as in a few months. I'm still under some tension right now, so I don't need this. I'm sorry for getting worked up, but this stuff isn't going to help me out as I need you to understand. I appreciate all the support and help, but please try to understand where I'm coming from

      Delete
    16. Sorry, I guess I misunderstood so please don`t get so angry saying you won`t tolerate stuff. I just thought the news would cheer you up. I even mentioned in my message that I was wondering if it was ok, so I was just hoping for clarity.

    2. So are you not angry anymore? I consider you a dear friend, one of my few true friends so I hope you are not angry. Hopefully you are doing better. I will keep praying for you and your family. Will you tell me when I can discuss some political things? Also will you contact me on Youtube?

    3. As of right now, I'm not "as" angry as before, but I still don't want to discuss politics. I consider you a good friend as well, and I will contact you on YouTube again, but as of right now, I still can't talk about what's going on out there. We still have to wait a while, and I will tell you when

    4. So you are still somewhat angry at me? If so I hope you soon won`t be anymore or that I can do something to make it up to you. I didn`t mean to upset you I just misunderstood you. I hoped you would be happy with all the support you gave. I will wait. If that is what you want I will accept it. It does seem as though there are things you can`t tell me. Is this true. Are there reasons that you don`t want to discuss politics that you cannot tell me? If so, I understand completely and I won`t judge you at all.

      Delete
    5. There are no reasons other than safety and with the fact that I don't want to know what they are doing. I'm not angry at you, and I understand that you misunderstood what I was trying to tell you. I'm happy of all your support and I'm glad you will wait. So no worries, I'm not mad at you at all

      Delete
    6. Oh ok. I thought there could be something else. Personally I don`t understand how talking politics online can be dangerous as I see people do it all the time and because we did it back in 2012. I am happy that you are not angry at me. I am very relieved. I care about you a lot.

I was hoping. Not to pressure you? Do you think you would be cool with discussing politics before the next election? Just curious.

      Delete
    7. Just to let you know, I won't be so sure until that time arrives. I know you would like to discuss this, but as of right now, I don't have the strength. I might be fine around the next election, but we will have to wait and see

      Delete
  7. Alright I understand. I am sad to see you don`t have the strength. Hope you will get better.

I hope you understand that I was just confused at first. Back in 2012 you didn`t seem to mind talking about politics at all. Do you know what changed? Back then you didn`t seem to be worried that people would read what we said. Did you have more strength back then?

I was also surprised because you discussed politics in this review, so that was part of the reason why I was confused.

    1. Thank you for your concern.

What changed was that last year was a bad year for everyone and in 2012 my confidence was high. I thought I could maintain the same level of confidence last year, but it was shattered by everything that was going around. Yes, I had more strength back then, but last year really drained me of everything.

I understand why you were confused, but I will let you know when my strength returns

    2. Hey so I was wondering. Could you please not review the upcoming Spielberg film the kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, because t is very likely to be anti-Catholic slanderous propaganda. If you do review it than please be negative about it, because I think it is terrible Hollywood keeps making this sicking bigoted propaganda against my church.

    4. Thank you for not reviewing that anti-Catholic Mortara trash from Spielberg. Hey it`s really a shame 2016 was such a terrible year for you. I wish we`d discussed politics more before that. 2014 and 2015 were terrible years for me. Things are still tough for me but not as much. I do feel very alone and abanoned a lot of the time. Hopefully this is a better year for you. You`re not still mad at me are you? We`re still friens right? I was just very shocked when you reacted angry for the first time because I didn`t know things had changed so much and you used to really like talking politics. That really helped me during rough times in 2012. A former friend recently sumped me just for disagreeing with an anti-Trump video he made and another friend is suffering from depression. No one seems to really understand me anymore. I hope you`re doing better and you told me that when you were we could finally discuss politics right? Cause I really need someone to talk about this stuff with. I have prayed non stop for you for many months. Also please get skype soon so we can talk face to face. That would be so great.

    5. Look man, I'm sorry that 2014 and 2015 were terrible years for you and that things are still tough for you. I'm still going through a bit of a rough time myself, as I can't find full-time work permanently and only find temporary work, which doesn't help. I'm not mad at you and I do forgive you, but as of right now, I'm still not fine with how politics is and I "don't" want to talk about it still. It's a difficult topic to talk about and I can't stand what's going on out there. Please understand that it's nothing against you, it's just that I can't talk about it. I really do hope that things go better for you, as I have been praying for you as well. I'm sorry for what happened to your friends, and I don't know if I'll get skype because I don't have a webcam that I can talk on.

    6. Thanks for being so nice and understanding. I hope you`ll find permanent work soon. To be honest, I am really dissapointd we still can`t discuss this because I think I could tell you stuff that would make you feel better and more optimistic. I am afraid you are being misled by the media. Hopefully we can do so soon. I`ll keep waiting.
